Desk / Vanity Makeover

For the last two years I have been in love with Bernhardt's Griffeth Secretary Desk and Stanley's Mercantile Drop front desk. The two tone color combination on these pieces is stunning. I love the contrast between the dark wood on the frame and the white drawers. The Bernhardt desk actually has white leather inset panels on the front and side panels. The construction is amazing and the style is classy and timeless.

And just look at those cute little interior drawers! And a grommet for cords!

Bernhardt Desk : $2209  on High Fashion Home
Stanley Mercantile Drop Front Desk: $1369 at various stores
Anyway, I don't exactly have a couple grand to shell out for some furniture I don't technically "need,"  especially since I'm a little nomadic renter. However, I am tired of the utilitarian set up that I have going now. I purchased the mirror about six months ago and I just finally got around to taking it out of the box and hanging it so that was step one of the little mini makeover. Since I live in basically a studio, I don't have space for a workspace and separate vanity so it has to serve the needs of both. While my current desk solution is somewhat functional, it isn't pretty and I would love for it to be pretty.

Here is my current "situation."

The super simple solution would be to get the drawer tower add on from IKEA, but that alone is $80.

I'm also not in love with the style. I'd like it to have a little more personality than just an Ikea Desk. Being the craigslist shopper that I am, I found this desk:

The color is almost right. It has removeable drawers on top. I like the dark wood. I like the clean lines and simple hardware. It might be a tiny bit boring and the storage isn't as much as the inspiration pieces but it's a big step up from the current situation and for the price it isn't bad at all, chair included.

Just to see what the potential could be, I did a quick PS rendering to see if I could make it work for my needs and wants. I think this will definitely do the trick for now. Plus it'll be a fun little weekend project. I texted the owner and will be picking it up this evening with two of my best friends.

The DIY idea is to get some white (faux)leather and inset it in the panels myself. Not sure how hard it will be or how legitimate it will look but that's the idea thus far. I haven't decided yet whether or not I want to paint just the bottom drawers or do the top drawers in white as well. I like this rendering for the moment. Eventually, I want to get a cute tan or gray tufted side chair instead of this office chair... but that is a project for another day.

After photos to be posted...

UPDATE:
11/19/2014
I managed to talk the owner of the desk into selling me only the desk for $45. The chair was in poor condition and very cheap... not worth salvaging. I splurged and found a pale blue greek key chair at Home Goods to compliment my bedding. I buffed the scratched up finish to get an even surface for staining. Since I was essentially keeping it the same color, I didn't strip the finish off or prime it. I refinished the desk with two coats of Rustoleum wood stain in Kona. The finish turned out beautiful and shiny and you can't tell that it was significantly scratched or water damaged before. I haven't recovered the drawers with white panyl paper yet but that project may come about at a later date. I found some gorgeous marble carrera tiles on craigslist for a steal of $40 for 3 22x20.5 3/4 inch tiles. For now, they are serving as my vanity top. I have another use in mind for them later but my busy schedule doesn't allow for too many DIYs at the moment, as you can see from how long it took to update this post. I am much happier than I was with my makeshift vanity that I had before. I found a pretty Ralph Lauren lamp at Home Goods. The West Elm lamp I put on top of my Ikea bookcase.

Snoqualmie Falls / Snoqualmie, WA // Tipsy Cow Burger Bar / Redmond, WA

After much indecisive debate on how to occupy our time, we decided some type of adventure followed by a good burger was a very patriotic thing to for a little independence day celebrating. Over the fourth of July weekend, I had the opportunity to finally make the short 20-30 minute drive to Snoqualmie Falls in Snoqualmie, WA. After living in Bellevue and Kirkland for the last two years and even working around the falls for four months, I can't believe it took me this long to make it out there.

Since it was a scenic trip, my boyfriend and I took the back way from Kirkland through Redmond and Fall City via Redmond-Fall City Rd to North Bend Way. While the Fourth of July itself was overcast with intermittent sprinkles, Sunday was a gorgeous sunny picturesque day perfect for a little jaunt to the country.

It was completely a spontaneous trip (aka the best kind). However, we weren't very equipped for the hiking part. You can get by with flip flops - because lets be real, I wouldn't let a little footwear stop me from getting a view like the above image by staying at the top. The hike down was easy, the hike back up was a little brutal and the rocks were a bit hard to navigate at the bottom but overall it was great!

Crown Point // Multnomah Falls // Latourell Falls

For Memorial Day weekend, we decided to take a little road trip down to Portland for a couple days just to get out of Seattle. As is customary practice for me, I made a quick trip out to the gorge via the Scenic Columbia River Highway out to Crown Point, Latourell Falls and  Multnomah Falls since it's only about a 20 minute drive from my parents house in Gresham.

Even on a cloudy, rainy day the views are spectacular.

As you can see, I don't know what appropriate hiking footwear is. Or clothes, for that matter. Woopsie.
Then again, if you can hike up it in ten minutes, flip flops are probably fine.

 Love this face.

Latourell Falls is my favorite of the falls along the scenic highway for the reason that it's super easy to hike to and you can hike to the top or bottom unobstructed and within just a few minutes from the road. If I'm gonna get this close, I want to be able to get wet!

Multnomah Falls

After the bridge was closed for a few months due to rockslide damage, it was exciting that it was repaired and reopened for use again.

6 Easy tips for styling your rented pad on a budget

This summer marks my 27th birthday and also my third year of being out of school and out on my own in the "real" world. During these past three years, I have moved eight times in three different states. One valuable lesson it has taught me is to keep only the things that I use or absolutely love. The other thing it has taught me is how to keep my standard of living design-wise without breaking the bank. Here are six tips for doing just that.

Paintings by Clare Elsaesser

As soon as I get a place that I'd actually like to settle down in for awhile, I will definitely be purchasing a 16x20 print from Clare Elsaesser. This artist has been featured on Etsy in 2010 and again for a home tour in 2012. She and her artist husband work from a home studio in their California beach house. What I especially love about her work is how calm and serene the scenes are. By making her subjects faceless, they become easy for anyone to relate to, especially my introvert self.
Her color palettes are soft and dreamy with pale blues, mossy greens and soft peachy tones. These are a few of my favorites from her etsy shop.
1 Desert
2 Happiness
3 Summer Girl
4 Swirl
I also love that she regularly posts to instagram and you can really follow her artistic process. You can follow her here. Here's a snippet of her work:

The Triple Door // Mason Jennings // Seattle

I went and saw Mason Jennings at the Triple Door in Seattle tonight and it was absolutely amazing. It is literally my new favorite place to see a show. The acoustics were phenomenal with the instruments not overpowering the vocals at all. Having a half moon shaped booth to sit at and leisurely eat  a semi-Asian dinner made by Wild Ginger while watching the bands play was a relaxing way to spend the evening. I am so glad I have a friend who plans ahead for events like this! Read more for more pics and my new favorite song!

Seattle // Queen Anne

I had a glorious walk around Queen Anne today in Seattle.
Got Thai food for lunch, walked around in the sunlight which I always seem lucky enough to catch somehow. Then headed to West Elm where I fell in love with this mini tabletop lamp.... too bad it's backordered forever.

Sole Society

My order from Sole Society came in. I am in shoe heaven. I was a little concerned about how the quality would be since they were all right around $50 but they are fairly comfortable and well made. They fit true to size. Always appreciative of good packaging, the black boxes with gunmetal metallic tissue paper is a nice touch. Free shipping was a nice incentive.

I was hoping to get some good sunrise pictures... but the fog had other plans.

Day Trip // Seattle to Bainbridge Island

City Walk and Ferry Ride

On a lazy Monday afternoon holiday, a close friend and I decided to hop on the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island. Having the day completely off, we brainstormed ways to pass the day. Rather, he did the brainstorming and I did the agreeing. The fog lifted to reveal a gorgeous sunny day without even a wisp of cloud nearby. The balmy 50 degree temperature in January gave way to a perfect mini vacation from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In a city typically blanketed with gray, the buildings seemed so naked and exposed without any cloud cover overhead.
